Some Expert System Need Common Sense
نویسنده
چکیده
An expert system is a computer program intended to embody the knowledge and ability of an expert in a certain domain. The ideas behind them and several examples have been described in other lectures in this symposium. Their performance in their specialized domains are often very impressive. Nevertheless, hardly any of them have certain common sense knowledge and ability possessed by any non-feeble-minded human. This lack makes them \brittle". By this is meant that they are diicult to extend beyond the scope originally contemplated by their designers, and they usually don't recognize their own limitations. Many important applications will require common sense abilities. The object of this lecture is to describe common sense abilities and the problems that require them. Common sense facts and methods are only very partially understood today , and extending this understanding is the key problem facing artiicial intelligence. This isn't exactly a new point of view. I have been advocating \Com-puter Programs with Common Sense"since I wrote a paper with that title in 1

متن کاملDeveloping a questionnaire in occupational epidemiological research: Some common sense guidelines
Background: The most common method of collecting data in any area of human health research is to apply a questionnaire. However, if extreme cautiousness is not taking into account while designing a questionnaire, the gathered data might be ineffective. Therefore, the aim of the present article is to discuss some of the most important set of guidelines in designing a questionnaire. &nb...
متن کاملUncommon Sense and Artificial Intelligence for Re- Engineering Procurement Systems
Common sense and occasional innovations have hitherto failed to fuel more than incremental improvements in construction procurement systems. Even the bolder initiatives have not yet unleashed promised productivity gains which have been allegedly restrained by adversarial and otherwise inappropriate procurement systems. Both (a) the present proliferation of procurement options; and (b) the scatt...
متن کاملIntellectual Performance using Dynamical Expert Knowledge in Seismic Environment
The paper introduces the notion of Dynamic Expert System. It shows that by restarting a common (static) expert system periodically it is possible to cope with dynamic environments. This quasi-static approach to dynamics is suitable if the environment is changing slowly enough in comparison with the inference engine operation and the user reaction time. Implementation of this scheme in "pure" Ex...
متن کاملNon-monotonic Reasoning in Artificial Intelligence
In this article we introduce a non-monotonic reasoning engine, i.e., the assumption-based truth maintenance system, and two reasoning paradigms for solving the diagnosis problem that are based on this engine. The objective of the article is to present solutions for problems occurring in classical expert systems based on first-order or propositional logic. In particular, we show how to handle in...
